卡罗尔（布莱思·丹纳 Blythe Danner 饰）曾是一位小有名气的歌手，在舞台上享受着万众瞩目的光彩。如今，年近七十的她早已无人问津，丈夫去世后就一直过着形单影只离群索居的生活。卡罗尔一直活在丈夫去世的阴影中，恐惧着失去和死亡，和女儿凯瑟琳（玛琳·阿克曼 Malin Akerman 饰）之间的关系亦十分紧张。
就在卡罗尔最困顿的时候，是她的好友乔治娜（琼·斯奎布 June Squibb 饰）、莎莉（雷亚·普尔曼 Rhea Perlman 饰）和罗娜（玛丽·凯·普莱斯 Mary Kay Place 饰）一直陪伴和鼓励着她。在朋友们的影响下，卡罗尔渐渐找回了开启新生活的信心，并先后结识了劳埃德（马丁·斯塔尔 Martin Starr 饰）和比尔（山姆·艾里奥特 Sam Elliott 饰）两名男子。
